Their reading class was transformed into a reading den. Everybody was cozy in their pajamas, slippers, robes, and other fuzzy warm things. Friday, Stephanie Patton, a former student will come and read to our Reading class as our guest reader for the month. Easter is just a few weeks away and tomorrow we go to Confessions after Mass. Everyone takes their Bible and reads or reflects on their confession while we wait for Father Bob. The students are going outside for lunch recess now, the weather is finally warm enough. Be sure your student comes to school in a jacket warm enough for them to be outside. The sixth graders had a Latin American feast when they presented their reports on Latin American countries. Each student brought a food that was familiar to their country and we had a huge long lunch. We ate the main entrees at lunch and had to take a dessert session for an afternoon snack in order to finish all the food! The food was as the kids say "awesome." Thank you to all the parents who prepared food and sent it in, and thank you to Mrs. Martin who reheated and helped to serve it.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

I'm excited to tell you about the new reading incentive that Mrs. Perry and myself have elected to do with the sixth grade reading classes beginning with the week of Jan. 31st. The students are put into groups of 5 of varying reading abilities. The students have a list of ten books of various reading levels and interests to read over a period of 10 weeks. As they read these books, they will keep a reading log of the book's plot, characters, settings, etc. They will also write questions that can be used in a team competition to be held in the library at the end of the 10 weeks. Each child is encouraged to read all 10 books if possible, but on a more reasonable note they will only be responsible for 2 to 4 books. These books are AR books so they may be used for AR/Independent Reading points.

The list of books is as follows: Holes, The Indian in the Cupboard, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, My Side of the Mountain, Number the Stars, Sharing Susan, Sticks, Summer of the Swans, Traders in Time, and Under the Blood Red Sun.

Encourage your student to read and read and read. I'm pushing the competition among the teams because it excites them to read when they are competitive. When they have the final round of quizzes in the library, you are invited to come and watch. We will keep you posted of the date. Have a rollicking good time reading before bedtime.

November 15th, 2010

I think I'm back on my blog and I wanted to touch base with parents to let them know of the following dates to remember:

November 18th, Thursday Turkey Feast money due
November 19th, Friday School Turkey Trot
Geography Tests 6th & 7th Thursday & Friday Nov. 18th & 19th
November 23rd, Tuesday AR/Book Report due for 6A & 6 B
November 25th-28th Thanksgiving vacation

I wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving!
Mrs Stewart

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Welcome back to school everyone! Please stop in Room 5 to pick up an informational letter about classroom policies and information about the AR/Independent Reading program for sixth grade. They want to go back as sixth graders so they may use the high rope challenge course. It's only 40 feet off the ground, you know what's a little height? The students were very well behaved showing their enthusiasm for everything that was planned. I had a great time with the kids in the outdoor setting. It's fun to watch them outside the classroom. The approximate due dates of the books are posted in the classroom by the AR sheets.

Your student is also reading a book for African -American History Month in February. I was impressed with their creativity and spirit of independence.

Dates to Remember

November 11-12 Conferences

November 13 No school

November 18 Cookie sale ends

November 19 Picture retake day

November 20 Turkey Trot

November 21 Protecting God's Children for parents who help out at school or

chaperone field trips

November 23 Field trip

November 24 Thanksgiving Feast $4.oo due

November 25 1/2 day of school

November 26-27 Thanksgiving Break

September 13, 2009

I think we have a schedule of our specials that is now safe to be posted. It is as follow:

              Monday Art 2:20- 3:05

              Tuesday Computers 12:05 - 1:50

              Wednesday Spanish 8:20 - 8:50

                                        Music 2:20 - 3:05

               Thursday Library 12:50 - 1:30

Friday Gym 12:05 - 12:50 Gym clothes, please!

I hope i did not inconvenience anyone too much by waiting until now to post these items but things seem to be changing on a daily basis due to the switching in the middle school.

We also eat our lunch at 11:30 a.m. with recess at 11:10 for those of you who drop a hot lunch off to your child.

I believe the fifth graders have adapted well to the change in their place in the building. they like the switching rooms for so many classes. The lockers have been a great surprise for them. The hardest part is remembering to get everything they need in the morning or at lunch . It makes them be more responsible for their own belongings and work because they're not allowed a lot of extra trips back to their locker by any of the teachers.

Start of School

Hi Fifth Graders,

I hope you have had a wonderful summer vacation!
